Bengaluru's Ashwini Ponnappa has announced her retirement from her Olympic career following her participation in the Paris Olympics 2024. As a three-time Olympian, she acknowledged the immense expectations and pressure faced by athletes, underscoring the necessity of preparing for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics. Her departure marks a significant milestone for Indian badminton, representing over fifteen years of dedication to showcasing India on the global stage. Raised in Bengaluru, Ashwini expresses admiration for the strong fan support enjoyed by sports like hockey, football, and cricket in the city. While badminton has always been her passion, she advises young individuals to prioritize both education and sports, emphasizing the importance of having a backup plan in case their athletic career does not progress as intended. Additionally, Ashwini commends Vinesh Phogat and reflects on the unexpected challenges athletes may face in their sporting journey.I never had the opportunity to meet her in person, but I believe her aspirations would have been dashed. I can relate to Vinesh on a deep level. She is an athlete who put in immense effort and fought admirably to reach the finals. Her journey has been remarkable, and there is much to be learned from her," Ashwini shares.

"Some individuals can handle criticism on social media, while others struggle with it." To maintain a strong mental state and avoid unnecessary outside pressure during major events like the Olympics, Ashwini advises staying away from social media. "During the Paris Olympics, I found that social media brought forth a lot of negative criticism. While some people can overlook external criticism, not everyone is capable of doing so. I have learned from that experience," she adds.

Although athletes receive funding from the government, it is essential that the resources are utilized effectively. Not all players possess great mental toughness. Coaches and support staff should ensure they nurture players' confidence alongside their skills.

Ashwini Ponnappa faces immense pressure like every experienced athlete during the Olympics. However, hope and pressure are a two-edged sword. It comes down to how one manages expectations.
